Job Hopping, Information Technology Spillovers, and Productivity Growth

چکیده
We show that regional differences in returns to information technology (IT) investments by US firms are attributable in part to IT spillovers generated by the flow of IT workers among firms. We use a newly developed source of employee micro-data with employer identifiers and location information to model IT workers’ mobility patterns. Access to an external IT pool that is one standard deviation larger than the mean is associated with a substantial increase in the output elasticity of own IT investment. The effects of spatial proximity disappear after controlling directly for employee mobility. Our estimates suggest, for instance, that the output elasticity of IT investment for non-durable goods manufacturing firms (SIC 20-29) located in some parts of Northern California is about 5% higher than that of firms in these industries located in other parts of the country.

متن کاملForeign Knowledge Spillovers and Total Factor Productivity Growth: Evidence from Four ASEAN Countries
This study examines the dynamic relationship between foreign direct investment (FDI) and total factor productivity having controlled for other channels of external openness: exports and imports in four ASEAN countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. We employ the panel data analysis PDA (fixed effect and dynamic panel models) as well as the panel cointegration and Granger causali...
متن کاملForeign direct investment and technology spillovers: Theory and evidence
Within the endogenous growth framework, we offer an explanation on how foreign direct investment (FDI) generates externalities in the form of technology transfer. We distinguish between the level and rate effects of spillovers on the productivity of domestic firms. A new insight gained from the theory is that the level and rate effects of spillovers can go in opposite directions. The negative l...
متن کاملMeasuring Spillovers From Information Technology Investments
Intra-industry spillovers from information technology investments have been cited as a potentially important driver of productivity growth. Using firm-level data to measure the sizes of these spillovers, however, can be challenging because of biases caused by 1) measurement error and 2) the difficulty in separating the effects of spillovers from the effects of shared technological opportunity. ...
متن کاملProductivity Growth, Human Capital, and Technology Spillovers Nonparametric Evidence for EU Regions
This paper assesses the strength of productivity spillovers nonparametrically in a data-set of 12 industries and 231 NUTS2 regions in 17 European Union member countries between 1992 and 2006. It devotes particular attention to measuring catching up through spillovers depending on the technology gap of a unit to the industry leader and the local human capital endowment. We find evidence of a non...
